Amorphous silica biomineralizations in Schoenoplectus californicus (Cyperaceae): their relation with maturation stage and silica availability Boletín de la Sociedad
Fernández Honaine,Mariana; Borrelli,Natalia L; Osterrieth,Margarita; Del Rio,Luis.
The factors involved on the silicifcation process in Cyperaceae are scarcely known. In this study we analyse the effect of maturation stage and silica availability on the production of amorphous silica biomineralizations in culms of Schoenoplectus californicus. Young and senescent culms were collected from ponds with different silica availability. Two complementary methodologies (calcination and staining techniques), light and scanning electron microscopy and EDS were applied for amorphous silica analyses in plants. Quantitative data were analysed by Kruskal-Wallis and a two-way ANOVA tests. There were no signifcant differences between silica content of culms collected in ponds with different silica availability. Instead, silica content in senescent culms...

Arctiin blocks hydrogen peroxide-induced senescence and cell death though microRNA expression changes in human dermal papilla cells Biol. Res.
Bae,Seunghee; Lim,Kyung Mi; Cha,Hwa Jun; An,In-Sook; Lee,Jeong Pyo; Lee,Kwang Sik; Lee,Ghang Tai; Lee,Kun Kook; Jung,Ho Jung; Ahn,Kyu Joong; An,Sungkwan.
BACKGROUND: Accumulating evidence indicates that reactive oxygen species (ROS) are an important etiological factor for the induction of dermal papilla cell senescence and hair loss, which is also known alopecia. Arctiin is an active lignin isolated from Arctium lappa and has anti-inflammation, anti-microbial, and anti-carcinogenic effects. In the present study, we found that arctiin exerts anti-oxidative effects on human hair dermal papilla cells (HHDPCs). RESULTS: To better understand the mechanism, we analyzed the level of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2)-induced cytotoxicity, cell death, ROS production and senescence after arctiin pretreatment of HHDPCs. The results showed that arctiin pretreatment significantly inhibited the H2O2-induced reduction in cell...

Changes in lipid profile during growth and senescence of Catharanthus roseus leaf Braz. J. Plant Physiol.
Mishra,Sanjay; Tyagi,Abhishek; Singh,I.V.; Sangwan,R.S..
Various lipid classes and compounds were monitored during the period of leaf emergence to leaf drop of Catharanthus roseus. The expansion to early maturation phase was accompanied by cellular build-up of all major lipid classes, whilst aging and senescence were characterized by their substantial decline, except for the neutral lipids; the leaf monogalactosyl diglyceride/digalactosyl diglyceride ratio decreased from 4.3 (complete maturity) to 2.1 (abscised stage). The early maturation stage was the earliest stage when appreciable amounts of free sterols and fatty acids could be observed. Sterol/phospholipids ratios increased by 68-fold in the abscised leaf as compared to that at full maturity. The unsaturated/saturated fatty acid ratio was far lower in the...

Dynamics of forage accumulation in Elephant grass subjected to rotational grazing intensities R. Bras. Zootec.
Sousa,Braulio Maia de Lana; Nascimento Júnior,Domicio do; Monteiro,Hélida Christhine de Freitas; Silva,Sila Carneiro da; Vilela,Hélio Henrique; Silveira,Márcia Cristina Teixeira da; Rodrigues,Carlindo Santos; Sbrissia,André Fischer.
We assessed the accumulation dynamics of forage and its components in Elephant grass cv. Napier (Pennisetum purpureum Schum.) that were subjected to three post-grazing height treatments (30, 50, and 70 cm) from February through May 2009 (experiment one) and December 2009 through May 2010 (experiment two). In experiment one, the grazing events started when the light interception by the canopy reached 95%. The same was adopted for experiment two, except for the first grazing event, which was based on the height of the apical meristems of basal tillers. The experimental design for both experiments was a randomized complete block with three replications. The pastures that were managed at a post-grazing height of 30 cm exhibited lower rates of leaf and stem...

Forage accumulation in brachiaria grass under continuous grazing with single or variable height during the seasons of the year R. Bras. Zootec.
Santos,Manoel Eduardo Rozalino; Fonseca,Dilermando Miranda da; Gomes,Virgílio Mesquita.
The objective of this study was to evaluate grazing management strategies of Brachiaria decumbens cv. Basilisk managed with different heights under continuous grazing with cattle. Two grazing management strategies were evaluated: maintenance of pasture with an average height of 25 cm throughout the experimental period and maintenance of pasture on the average of 15 cm in height during winter, up to 25 cm from the beginning of spring. The split-plot scheme and the randomized block design with four replications were adopted. The grazing management strategies corresponded to the primary factor, while the seasons (winter, spring and summer) corresponded to secondary factor. The reduction of the average sward height to 15 cm in the winter resulted, when...

Forage productivity and morphogenesis of Axonopus aureus under different nitrogen fertilization rates R. Bras. Zootec.
Costa,Newton de Lucena; Moraes,Anibal de; Monteiro,Alda Lúcia Gomes; Motta,Antonio Carlos Vargas; Oliveira,Ricardo Augusto de; Rodrigues,Antonio Neri Azevedo.
The effect of nitrogen (N) fertilization (0, 50, 100 and 200 kg N ha-1) on forage yield and morphogenesis of Axonopus aureus was evaluated in the savannas of Roraima State, Brazil. The experimental design was in randomized blocks with three replicates. The grass showed high responsiveness to N fertilization. Dry weight (DW) yield, morphogenetic and structural traits and forage quality were positively affected by N fertilization. The effects of N fertilization on DW yield, N content, leaf appearance rate, leaf elongation rate, number of live leaves/tiller, final leaf length and leaf area index were quadratic and maximum values were estimated with application of 168.8 (2,181 kg ha-1); 124.8 (21.1 g/kg); 158.5 (0.163 leaf/day per tiller); 172.3 (2.75...

Growth and reproduction of the understory palm Geonoma schottiana Mart. in the gallery forest in Central Brazil Rev. Bras. Bot.
Sampaio,Maurício Bonesso; Scariot,Aldicir.
To understand the growth and reproduction of the palm Geonoma schottiana in the gallery forest of Central Brazil, two hypotheses were raised: (i) production of leaves and reproductive structures are concentrated in the period of the year with high light availability; (ii) leaf production and reproductive activity are related to plant length. However, it is expected that senility effects will cause fast reduction in growth and reproduction activities in higher plants. Growth and reproduction were concentrated in the dry season, when insolation is higher than in the wet season, suggesting that leaf and inflorescence production on G. schottiana in the gallery forest understory is more limited by light than by soil humidity. As the individual grows, leaf...

Infodynamics, a Developmental Framework for Ecology/Economics Ecology and Society
Salthe, Stanley N; Biological Sciences, Binghamton University; ssalthe@binghamton.edu.
Infodynamics, for our purposes, is a developmental perspective that animates information theory by way of thermodynamics. The isomorphism between Boltzmann's statistical interpretation of physical entropy as disorder and Shannon's formulation of variety as informational entropy signals a deep connection between information and entropy production. Information is any configuration that might have been different, providing that it delays energy dissipation so that the energy is dissipated more completely. The entropy production of individual dissipative structures increases at first but eventually decelerates. I consider the questions: why do these structures grow? And why don't they keep on growing? As the universal expansion of the Big Bang accelerated,...

Laser speckle techniques in quality evaluation of orange fruits AGRIAMBI
Rabelo,Giovanni F.; Braga Júnior,Roberto A.; Fabbro,Inácio M. D..
This work presents a study of a new technology applied in quality tests of oranges. Evaluations were performed using a nondestructive and noninvasive method based on the interpretation of an optical phenomenon that occurs when the fruit is illuminated with coherent light, referred as biospeckle. The speckle patterns of laser light scattered in orange fruits have been measured through their quantification. For the quantification of the variation by biospeckle, the autocorrelation function and the modified occurrence matrix were used. From these functions, two parameters were obtained: the statistical cummulant and the moment of inertia, calculated from the modified occurrence matrix. These values were used as quality and senescence indicators for the...

Longevidade e oviposição de Ophyra albuquerquei (Diptera, Muscidae) em condições de laboratório Iheringia, Sér. Zool.
Krüger,Rodrigo F.; Ribeiro,Paulo B.; Carvalho,Claudio J. B. de; Lambrecht,Francine M.; Nunes,Adrise M..
Aspects related to the longevity and oviposition of Ophyra albuquerquei Lopes, 1985 are studied. Males had a mean lifespan longer than females (40.24 vs. 33.15 days, respectively), while still possessing qualitative advantages during this period. Females O. albuquerquei were fed on powdered milk, fish flour, refined sugar and water, and provided fish flour and moistened sawdust for oviposition. The length of the oviposition period for females was 46.75 days, and most of the deposition of the eggs occurred in the first days of the colony. Females completed 50% of their egg deposition by Day 16, seven days before the large last mortality peak and about 12 days after the first oviposition in the colony. Females deposited an average of 184 eggs per individual....

Mechanical behavior of 'Niagara Rosada' grape berry detachment REA
Gomes,Daniel; Ferraz,Antonio C. de O.
The 'Niagara Rosada' grape is the main Brazilian table grape belonging to the Labrusca family. It develops medium, cylindrical and compact bunches with berries presenting a pinkish skin and a foxy flavor that is valued in the Brazilian market. These berries are tender and have a pedicel-berry connection provided by the vascular bundles and surrounding skin. This cultivar is very susceptible to berry drop mainly caused by vibration and senescence. The objective of this study was to evaluate the temporal mechanical behavior of the pedicel-berry detachment, using resistance indexes extracted from traction force-deformation curves. Test results showed two different detachment types. In the first one, which exhibited higher average resistance, a considerable...

Simultaneous age-dependent and age-independent sexual selection in the lekking black grouse (Lyrurus tetrix) ArchiMer
Kervinen, Matti; Lebigre, Christophe; Soulsbury, Carl D..
Individuals' reproductive success is often strongly associated with their age, with typical patterns of early-life reproductive improvement and late-life senescence. These age-related patterns are due to the inherent trade-offs between life-history traits competing for a limited amount of resources available to the organisms. In males, such trade-offs are exacerbated by the resource requirements associated with the expression of costly sexual traits, leading to dynamic changes in trait expression throughout their life span. Due to the age dependency of male phenotypes, the relationship between the expression of male traits and mating success can also vary with male age. Hence, using longitudinal data in a lekking species with strong sexual selection - the...

Sodium Chloride-Induced leaf senescence in Hydrocotyle bonariensis Lam. and Foeniculum vulgare L. BABT
Haddad,Claudia R. B.; Mazzafera,Paulo.
Leaf senescence induced by sodium chloride was studied in Hydrocotyle bonariensis Lam. and Foeniculum vulgare L. Both species belong to Umbelliferae family, however only H. bonariensis grows spontaneously in sandy soils of coastal regions (saline soils). Leaves of plants receiving nutrient solutions containing different concentrations of NaCl were evaluated for fresh and dry weights and chlorophyll content. The denaturating electrophoretic profiles of leaf proteins were also studied. Sodium chloride changed the protein profile of F. vulgare and hastened the leaf senescence of both the species. However, plants of H. bonariensis receiving 599 mM NaCl lasted longer than F. vulgare. Therefore, the occurrence of H. bonariensis in saline soils might be related...

Storage of cut Heliconia bihai (L.) cv. Lobster Claw flowers at low temperatures AGRIAMBI
Costa,Andreza S.; Nogueira,Luis C.; Santos,Venézio F. dos; Camara,Terezinha R.; Loges,Vivian; Willadino,Lilia.
The postharvest conservation of cut Heliconia flowers is an important factor to the success of commercialization, especially with regard to exportation. In the present study, the maximal storage time of cut inflorescences of Heliconia bihai cv. Lobster Claw at two different temperatures (12 and 19 °C) was evaluated and compared to laboratory conditions (25 °C, control treatment). Changes in visual quality, fresh weight and bract color (L*, a* and b*) were determined. The visual quality of the inflorescences and fresh weight decreased with time in all treatments. Symptoms of chilling injury were observed on the inflorescences stored at 12 °C for six and eight days. Bract color was not affected by temperature, storage time or the senescence process. The...
